Prof. Jun Wang is Lichtenberger Family Chair in Chemical Engineering and directs the Atmospheric and Environmental Research Laboratory at the University of Iowa. He is an expert in satellite remote sensing and Earth system modeling, focusing on changes of air quality and atmospheric composition associated with wildfires, volcanic eruptions, and other natural and human activities. He has served in leadership roles for NASA satellite science teams, satellite missions, and interdisciplinary projects in areas of precision agriculture and public health. Prof. Wang is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union, and a Senior Member of IEEE. He has published more than 230 peer-reviewed papers with an H-index of 72.
He conducted his Ph.D. work in atmospheric sciences in the University of Alabama–Huntsville in 2005 under the support of NASA’s Earth system science graduate fellowship and his postdoctoral work in Harvard University with the support of NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoctoral fellowship in 2005-2007. He was a recipient of NASA’s New Investigator Program award in 2009, AGU’s Atmospheric Science ASCENT Award in 2022, and AGU’s Joanne Simpson Medalist in 2024.
